Should the military use electronic ear protection?

If they already do, please say so. Ive seen a lot of soldiers in the middle east without hearing protection which could really cause some problems in the long run (like my step grandfather, he was an artillery man in the Korean War era; he has to wear hearing aids now, cause he didn't use protection).

From what I hear (Ive never used them myself, I admit), electronic hearing devices can even increase subtle and ambient sounds; while still protecting the wearer from sounds that would be harmful to the human ear. I personally support it, they are expensive but ears are one of the most important things a soldier has. That, their eyes and perception - which they all apply to.|||Hai Splinter,

Military personnel use hearing aids to protect when handling high sound intensity bombs and artillery,As drums inside the ear is so sensitive it is better to wear hearing aids in training and war fields... otherwise it is not necessary to use hearing aids. You can learn more about hearing loss and hearing aids at http://www.aidright.com/|||Odds are they are trying to develop something along those lines right now. We do get issued ear plugs and are encouraged to use them but because they muffle ambient noise they don't get used as often as they should be. I think the Army is developing a helmet that will have built in earphones, microphones and a full ballistic face-shield with a system to project images on the face-shield like maps. But that'll be years in the future.|||We do have it. It's called quiet pro. Most of us refuse to wear it. It is bulky, annoying, and decreases awareness which can get you killed. We are issued earplugs that deaden sound while still allowing communication, but again, we don't wear them except for at the range. If you decide you have time during a firefight you might put them in but that is not likely.|||we get issued ear plugs, they're double sided so you could choose between green and yellow side. green side was your average rubber ear plug. yellow had a hole drilled throught he middle. loud noises are still filtered out to a pretty good degree, but it allows speacha nd regular noises through.

a lot of uss pulled off the green side since it stuck out and just put int he yellow. you cant see it from the outside unless you're directly looking in a soldiers ear. heres a link: http://chppm-www.apgea.army.mil/document鈥?/a>

problem with electronics is that its subject to possible failure on so many levels, especially electronic hearing devices. they can pick up distortion and make u unable to hear anything, they're sensitive to water, and their battery can run out. its always best to go with something simple when you can, and resort to electronics only when it has a clear advantage that cannot be reached through non electronic means and has a back up if possible. take soldiers who use the EOTech. behind it is a backup iron sight just incase it breaks or the batteries die.
