Most of these are based on emissions in the near infrared. There's a simple lens and a receptor region split into several zones. There's a photocell for each zone. The photocells are connected to simple circuitry that counts changes in the photocell response over a couple of seconds. Typically, successive changes in two or three adjacent zones within the given time frame will trigger a "found event" signal, usually a logical "high" signal on the output line.
