Genie garage door will open but you have to hold the button for it to shut. whats wrong?

the garage door opener is about 3 years old, it will open fine with the remote and the wall button, but when closing, it only works with the wall button (and you have to hold it untill it goes all the way down.) which is a pain in the A@@ because you have to back from your car out go through the front door to close it and go all the way back around outside. i dont have any money to buy a new one. ( oh and ive already bought and installed new electronic eyes) didnt work.

does anyone know whats wrong?|||Found this on a Genie garage door repair site.

Garage Door Troubleshooting Guides

My garage door will not go down using my transmitters. I can only get the door down by holding down on the wall button.

When the infra-red sensors are malfunctioning, usually one of the sensor lights will be blinking. The problem is either due to a blocked path between the sensors, dirty eyes, loose wires at the sensors or at the motor head, or just bad sensors. The transmitters (remotes) will not work to close the garage door. You will find that the door will only move an inch or so in the close direction and reverse. When this happens your garage door will only close by holding down on the wall button, or wall console, until the door fully closes. This method is the only way to override the safety and close the door.

To try and correct the problem, make sure the eyes on the sensors are clean, the wire connections are securely fastened at the sensors and motor head, and the eyes are directed at each other. Also, try unplugging the garage door opener and re-plugging the unit back into the outlet. This acts as a reset and may reset the sensors. If nothing works, it may be that you have to replace the sensors. You can find new sensors on our Web site in the category section or by going directly to Infra-Red Sensors.

Hope this does it for you.|||make sure your eyes are lineing up and the lights on them on. On genies they are red. If they are aligned then chances are you have had a power surge or lightning strike. In which case you might need a new circuit board. I wouldnt invest fifty cents in a genie, they are nothing but junk. I would recomend either go get a liftmaster or craftsman, or any thing by chamberlain|||It sounds like your electric eyes are either not properly aligned or are dirty. There should be a small colored light on each sensor, if the light is blinking the eyes are not properly aligned. Adjust one sensor up or down until the light becomes solid. Also, clean the lense of each unit.
